Ibby stayed home from school today. Her teacher had announced yesterday that there would be a substitute and Ibby decided that she just could not handle that kind of stress and could she please not go. Matthew asked her if she would be willing to rake all day if she stayed home and she opened her eyes very wide and nodded her head earnestly. Well, that did it. We are pushovers and she is having a free day. I thought it would be nice for her to entertain baby all day, but there is something wrong with him so he is camped on my lap. I hate it when you have no idea what the problem is. He just keeps crying and fussing, not sleeping or eating well. He doesn't have a fever. I am bewildered and baffled. Perhaps it is simply that he is taking the no poo thing seriously.

no more poo
No baby is not potty-trained -- no SHAM-poo. I have decided to try something different because I have long been bothered by the chemicals used in shampoo, but also, with so many people in the house, cannot really afford to buy the crazy expensive organic varieties. What to do? Then a friend mentioned that she was using baking soda and I thought that sounded splendid. You mix 1 T. baking soda with 1 c. of water then pour a little, rub, rub, rub, pour more, rub, rub, rub, rub some more, then rinse and voila! Your hair is super clean! To offset the baking soda, you then do a vinegar rinse which I very unscientifically mixed in a spray bottle. My hair feels so soft, clean, and not dry at all. I have seen that you can add oils to your hair to make it smell good, add moisture, etc. It is sad that I don't have amazing hair to begin with because I am sure that if I tell people to just look at me to be convinced of this practical method they would think, "Hmmm. I guess I could try that if I wanted straight, flat, thin, insubstantial locks with no volume." Someone completely unbiased in any way told me that my hair did look very shiny. You all should try it for yourselves.

I would bet money that Baby's problem is a) teeth or b) a fever that will show up tomorrow.
But yes, I feel bad when they seem so crabby and there is nothing that you can do to make it better.
How did she do on the leaf raking???
Ok, is this serious???? Does the baking soda work? Really? For long hair? This is hard for me to believe, but maybe I will try it. Unfortunately I do need conditioner or I would never be able to comb it after.
whenever andrew gets like that, he's usually cutting some new teeth. Or just getting closer to being a 2 year old... hmmmm.
I've wondered about the baking soda thing - I'm with you on the shampoo prob.
I actually only wash my kids hair once every two weeks and it's fine. We rinse a lot, but I keep the shampoo out of it for a while - you can't even tell. Most people would probably be grossed out to know that.
I think I've only washed Andrew's hair once, maybe twice. I read that with little kids you don't have to because there hair is accustomed to the daily routine and our bodies naturally adapt. I've been trying a more infrequent schedule with my hair too. I was every 2 days or so. Rinse often, makes all the difference. Granted, day 2 is usually pulled back - but I feel better about it....
Okay, I'm TOTALLY going to have to try this instead of shampoo!!
Update: I tried this on Will's hair and it seemed to work fine, except that he smelled like a wet dog! Is that a problem? Ha, ha. I'm very intrigued by the idea because I hate chemicals too. I'm going to try it tomorrow, but I have serious doubts: Thick, coarse, long hair? Hmmm... we'll see.
A question for Amy: Does rinsing make the difference in how it looks, or how clean it is? I hate to admit it, but I love the smell of kids hair after it is shampooed, and I hate that dirt smell it gets if you let it go a few days without washing. Hey, maybe I could add lavender to the baking soda mix!
I don't use a lot of soap or shampoo on my kids, never have, a nurse told me once kids don't need anything but water. My favorite scent on earth is a clean natural smelling baby. I'm wondering if a vinegar rinse leaves hair smelling - well vinegary?
Oooo, ya. Angry Chicken has stopped using poo too. Maybe I should do that rather than fantasizing about buying the $25 bottle of Aveda for my birthday. Hummm. Get some nice oils (which will last forever) and call it good.
